Mail rules can vary between South Carolina Department of Corrections (SCDC) state facilities and county jails in South Carolina  . Some county jails use third-party scanning systems. • Only postcards are accepted. Letters, greeting cards, and other types of personal mail are not permitted.
  Postcards must be 4" × 6" or smaller. Oversized postcards may be rejected.
   

• Use metered postage only. Postcards with adhesive stamps are not accepted.
   

• Address mail correctly. Include the resident's committed name, SCDC number, housing unit (if required), full facility name, and complete mailing address.
   

• Do not include prohibited content. Postcards cannot contain nudity, sexual content, gang-related imagery,
  weapons, drug use, violence, or anything that threatens the safety or security of the facility.
   

• Writing must meet facility requirements. Only black or blue ink is permitted for handwritten mail. Colored ink, glitter, and scented materials are not allowed.
   

• Rejected mail is returned or held. The sender and resident are notified if mail is rejected, and residents may receive rejected mail upon release if it cannot be returned to the sender.
